Camping Adventures

Last weekend we headed up to a place called "Hidden Falls" for a family camping trip.  It was expected to be one of the last weekends that campfires would be allowed in the mountain areas due to the extremely dry weather here.  So, since camping isn't really camping without a fire, we decided we'd better get a quick trip in.  The drive there was a bit slow as the road was kind of curvy and bumpy, but the ride was well worth it.  The campground we ended up at only had 8 sites.  We got a great site down by the river (the big bummer was that the campground was "hike in" so we did a lot of heavy hauling back & forth from the van since the site we picked was the one farthest away.)  There were only 2 other people camping while we were there and they were at least 100 meters away, so it almost felt like we were backpacking.  The boys just loved playing in pools in the river, hiking up and down the hill, and jumping off rocks.

On Friday morning the Heeringas drove up to spend the day with us.  Nathan "happened" to bring a really long strap along.  His project for the afternoon was to find something creative to do with the strap and he did!  He looped one end of it over a branch about 40 ft. up in a pine tree, tied the other end to a tree up the hill on the other side of the river, and above the middle of the river he dropped down 2 straps with loops at the bottom.  After finding  a flat, "comfortable" log to slide through the loops we had ourselves quite the swing over the river.  I must admit I wasn't too crazy about it at first since it swung over rocks and logs etc., but the kids loved it and no one got hurt.   Noah said there was "No Way" he was going on the swing, but Silas loved it and prided himself in the fact that he was the only one who rode it 3 times.  Never a dull moment with the Heeringas!  We're so glad they were able to join us for the day.

Noah recently took a liking to Word Search puzzles,
which he and Silas worked on by the fire at night.

This boy never smiles nice for the camera,
I finally got him pretty good!

A grueling game of "Go Fish!"

Trying out the swing for the first time

(Notice the little tongue sticking out - so cute!)

Great times with Nathan.  Silas absolutely loves Nathan.
The first thing he asked on Friday morning was
"When will Nathan be here?".
I think they might have mischievousness in common!
